2021 Cheshire – Stepping Back in Time
A 4-night, 5-day tour – Wednesday 21st to Sunday 25th April 2021
This tour includes many highlights of the Peak District, Derbyshire and Cheshire. A specially themed tour
with some wonderful excursions, including the ever-popular Chatsworth House
Wednesday: At breakfast time we set off for Cheshire with ample comfort stops including an afternoon visit to Sheffield’s Weston Park Museum. An award-winning museum where you’ll discover the real story of Sheffield, from its geological roots to the people, politics and music that shaped the modern city. After, we travel the short distance to our hotel with time relax before dinner.
Thursday: Departing after breakfast, we enjoy a tour highlight and a visit to Chatsworth House and Gardens; the magnificent home of the Devonshire family, which has appeared in period dramas. Chatsworth House is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and has been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family. Explore over 30 rooms in the house including the Painted Hall, State Rooms, Sculpture Gallery and discover its art, history and family. Plus, learn how succeeding generations have made their mark on one of Derbyshire’s finest country houses. Later, we continue into the Peak District, to view the spectacular Ladybower Reservoir and visit the Derwent Dam & Visitor Centre, where the Dam Busters Squadron practiced their manoeuvres during WWII. We’ll return to our hotel to relax before dinner.
Friday: Breakfast then we travel to Crich and to the Tramway Village, a lovingly restored period village that is also home to the National Tramway Museum. Exhibitions bring to life the history of the tram and visitors can ride on the restored tramways. Other attractions include a workshop and viewing gallery, an old-fashioned sweet shop and a restored public house. After lunch, we continue to the pretty town of Ashbourne, the ultimate Derbyshire destination. It’s a thriving picturesque market town on the edge of The Peak District, rich in history. Combining a medieval street pattern and historic buildings with a wealth of high quality shops. The cobbled market place, hidden alleys and yards are a delight to explore before we return to our hotel for dinner.
Saturday: After breakfast, we visit the historic market town of Buxton renowned for its healing waters and Pavilion Gardens and set in 23 acres of Victorian landscaping. We’ll continue to Lyme Park and step back in time to the Edwardian age – Lyme’s ‘Golden Era’. Enjoy the house with its lavish interiors, the beautiful gardens and enchanting lake where a certain Mr Darcy appeared in the BBC TV’s production of Pride and Prejudice. Dinner awaits later at our hotel.
Sunday: Farewell to our hosts then our homeward journey including a lunch time stop over at St Albans – a jewel of a city. You’ll find history, culture, refreshments and a beautiful cathedral. With happy tour memories, we arrive home during later afternoon.
