SHORT BREAKS

Autumn Colours & Garden Delights of Wales

A 4-night, 5-day tour – Tuesday 05th to Saturday 09th October 2021

The Mumbles • Cae Hir Gardens • Gower Peninsula • National Botanic Garden of Wales

Savour the beautiful landscape, picturesque beaches and spectacular gardens on this tour based in South Wales. Included are two garden visits, a tour of the Gower Peninsula and scenic drive through the Brecon Beacons.

Tuesday: A breakfast time departure for our Welsh adventure with a comfort stop, and an extended lunch stop, at Cardiff Bay with its may leisure activities and attractions. This precedes the arrival at our hotel with time to relax and explore before evening dinner is served.

Wednesday: A hearty Welsh breakfast then we depart for a guided tour of delightful Cae Hir Gardens. This private Welsh garden with a Dutch history demonstrates how ordinary can be made extraordinary, a true garden with a difference. Then a scenic drive through the Brecon Beacons to the tiny welsh village of Llandovery – legends and history lie at the heart of this charming market town on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, surrounded by majestic mountains, leafy woodlands and magical waterfalls that promise a breath-taking view in every direction. On then to the University town of Lampeter, the oldest degree awarding institution in England and Wales except for Oxford and Cambridge. Evening dinner completes the day.

Thursday: Enjoy breakfast then discover the beautiful scenery of the Gower Peninsula and The Mumbles, an area renowned for its sandy beaches. We visit the Gower Heritage Centre in a converted water mill where an official local guide will join the coach for a tour of the peninsula’s highlights before returning for a cream tea or Welsh Cawl and tour of the Mill. This afternoon we visit the National Waterfront Museum to explore the displays and exhibits. You can also enjoy the neighbouring Maritime Quarter full of interesting and historic places or meander along the promenade and soak up the sights of Swansea Bay. We return to our hotel in time for evening dinner.

Friday: Breakfast, then we begin the day at the National Botanic Gardens of Wales. Nestled in the Tywi Valley, the garden combines themed displays, rolling parkland and secluded woodland. The award-winning Great Glasshouse is home to a profusion of rare, fragrant, exotic and even spooky plants. We continue to Aberglasney Gardens – which was made famous by the BBC television series “A Garden Lost in Time” which followed its restoration. Today it is quite simply one of Wales’ finest gardens. A renowned plantsman’s paradise with a unique Elizabethan cloister garden at its heart, Aberglasney offers the opportunity to explore magnificent gardens which along with the fully restored ground floor of Aberglasney’s grade II* listed mansion offers even more interest. Relax before evening dinner.

Saturday: Our homeward journey includes an extended lunch stop at Bristol Harbour. Once a busy dock where sailors and merchants would trade goods and set sail for voyages of discovery, Bristol’s Harbourside has many attractions. Our Welsh garden adventures end in the local area during the early evening.
