A 4-night, 5-day tour – Saturday 15th to Wednesday 19th July 2023

Ayrshire Coast • Great Cumbrae • Troon • Arran • Brodick Castle • Largs • Culzean Castle

This tour combines exploration of the Ayrshire Coast with a spot of island hopping. Featured are Culzean Castle, Brodick Castle and plenty of time at leisure. Combined with a variety of popular excursions including the Robert Burns Museum and Birthplace, this tour will not disappoint.

SATURDAY: We set off with ample comfort stops and travel into Scotland to reach our stunning Ayrshire hotel. The journey includes a refreshment stop at Gretna Green in Dumfries and Galloway is possibly the most romantic place in Scotland, if not in the UK. This small Scottish village has become synonymous with romance and runaway lovers. We continue to arrive at our hotel in time for evening dinner.

SUNDAY: A Scottish breakfast awaits then we set off for a scenic drive to the charming seaside resort of Largs for the short crossing to Great Cumbrae, a small and picturesque island only 10 miles round. We stop in Millport before the return crossing to Largs. The only settlement is Millport, a seaside town with a Victorian promenade which curves around an attractive hilly bay on the south coast. Millport is home to Britain’s smallest cathedral, the Cathedral of the Isles, which was completed in 1851 to a design by William Butterfield, one of the leading Gothic revival architects of the day. Located on the Firth of Clyde, Largs is a charming Scottish seaside resort, complete with Victorian promenade and a choice of ice cream parlours and shops. This afternoon, there’s time at leisure in Troon. Overlooking the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig, Troon is situated on the south Ayrshire coast with its sandy beaches, beautiful views and bustling harbour. Evening dinner ends the day.

MONDAY: After breakfast, we head south to Culzean Castle and Country Park, perched high above the Ayrshire cliffs. A costumed guide will share the secrets of the castle, once home to the chieftan of Clan Kennedy, an ancient Scottish family descended from Robert the Bruce. We return to Irvine following time at leisure in Ayr. Later, we visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and Burns Cottage. A humble cottage where Robert Burns was born and spent the first years of his life. Also explore the museum which houses more than 5,000 Burns artefacts including his handwritten manuscripts before we return to our base in time for evening dinner.

TUESDAY: Following breakfast, a full day excursion to the Isle of Arran. It is a place where you can find a little bit of everything you’d ever want from a Scottish island; an ever-changing coastline, dramatic mountain peaks, sheltered beaches, verdant forests. Beginning with a visit to Brodick Castle which houses a glorious collection of furniture, with some pieces dating as far back as the 17th century, and was once the ancient seat of the Dukes of Hamilton. The garden, created in 1923 by the Duchess of Montrose, has been lovingly restored and the grounds contain numerous paths offering great views of the island. Sometimes, you can catch sight of rare red squirrels! It is dramatically set against the backdrop of Goatfell, the grand red sandstone, baronial-style castle has stunning views over Brodick Bay. We spend time in Brodick before re-boarding the ferry back to the mainland to continue to our hotel for evening dinner.

WEDNESDAY: After a hearty Scottish breakfast, we bid farewell to our hosts as our homeward journey commences, again, with ample comfort stops as we head south to arrive home with fond memories of our adventure during mid evening.
