Stay at a spectacularly situated hotel on this tour showcasing England and Scotland in equal measures. With a blend of north, south, old and new, we include a cruise in the Lake District, Devils Porridge Museum and Lowther Castle and Gardens. Combined with fascinating tours of ‘Secret Solway’, no stone will be left uncovered on this voyage of discovery.
Thursday: We travel directly to the Holiday Inn Hotel, Dumfries with ample comfort stops enroute. On arrival, there’s time to relax and explore the grounds before evening dinner is served.
Friday: A Scottish breakfast then a full day official and guided tour of ‘Secret Solway’ in Cumbria. With dramatic views across the water to Scotland, we take in the fortified medieval sites and the local history of attractive Solway coastal towns and villages. There’s time at leisure in the seaside location of Silloth which is followed by a scenic drive along the coast to the once important shipbuilding town of Maryport. We savour the distant views of the Cumbrian Lake District Fells and Scottish hills on the return journey to the hotel. A truly interesting day followed by evening dinner.
Saturday: After breakfast, we journey to Devil’s Porridge Museum. Commemorating HM Factory Gretna, it was the largest munitions factory in the world during the First World War. The museum also brings to life the Solway Military Coast during the Second World War and beyond. We meet our official guide for an afternoon tour taking in the Scottish side of the Solway estuary. There will be a visit to Annan harbour, once a busy ship building site and an historic stepping off point for Scottish people emigrating to the USA and Canada in the 1800s. Also included are landscape and sites which influenced the famous Scottish poet, Rabbie Burns. After all of that it’ll be time for evening dinner!
Sunday: A hearty Scottish breakfast before a glorious drive to Lowther Castle and Gardens. ‘A jewel in the English Lake District’s crown’, the castle was built in 1806 as the seat of the Lowther family. The castle ruins, as they are now, were once home to an array of treasures from around the globe. With visiting dignitaries including kings, queens, writers and poets, the exhibition in the old stable block tells the story of the family and its 850-year history in vivid detail. This afternoon, there is a short journey to Glenridding for a relaxing cruise on Lake Ullswater. Later, we return to our hotel with leisure time to enjoy before evening dinner is served.
Monday: Departing our hotel after breakfast, our homeward journey commences with ample comfort stops en-route as we head south with fond memories of an interesting and rewarding adventure to arrive in the local area during the early evening.
The Hotel:The Holiday Inn Dumfries sits conveniently within the 85-acre estate at The Crichton, with stunning views of the Crichton Memorial Church and Easterbrook Hall, and it is only a short walk to The Crichton Gardens, The airy, modern rooms have free WiFi and workspaces, as well as power showers and pillow menus. You can relax with a freshly brewed tea as you watch the flat-screen TV. The restaurant caters for all tastes, with all dishes on the menu using seasonal locally sourced produce, so diners can be assured of honest, high quality food.
