Torquay & Dartmoor Delights

A 4-night, 5-day tour – Saturday 23rd to Wednesday 27th April 2022

River Exe • Train Ride • English Riviera • Topsham • Exmouth • Dartmoor • Tavistock

The popular seaside resort of Torquay is our base for this lovely tour, which includes a river cruise and steam train excursion, plus the services of a local guide for a day. A full day at leisure offers a Mystery Tour or it will be yours to enjoy the way you will!

Saturday: A breakfast time departure as we head to the West Country to include a comfort stop. We also have an extended lunch stop at the city of Exeter which has a real sense of individuality. Its varied cultural scene is embraced by proud locals, and the diverse mix of eateries means it is renowned as one of the foodie capitals of the South West. We continue to our base at Torbay in time to relax before evening dinner is served.

Sunday: Breakfast is served then we travel to Exmouth in time for morning coffee before a delightful cruise on the English Riviera and the River Exe to Topsham. With views that are unrivalled in terms of history, beauty and wildlife, the Skipper will give you a live, informative and enjoyable commentary, ensuring that you get to see everything this beautiful river has to offer. Lunchtime in once a thriving port, Topsham is now a pretty maritime town with a mix of fascinating architecture, from 17th and 18th century Dutch style merchants’ houses to antique tea shops and pubs. Later, we board the train to Exmouth – a lively town with 2 miles of golden sands where the Exe meets the sea. The train ride between Topsham and Exmouth runs along the Avocet Line, one of the greatest scenic railway lines in the country which hugs the Exe Estuary for much of its route. (Direction of travel will depend on the tide) At our hotel – relax before evening dinner.

Monday: A hearty breakfast then a local guide will join us for a full day excursion through the beautiful scenery of Dartmoor. Guides will have their preferred routes and stopping points but the tour will include the ancient market town of Tavistock, an opportunity to view Buckfast Abbey and views of the lovely wild ponies for which Dartmoor is famous. After the days adventure with our official guide, evening dinner is served.

Tuesday: Breakfast then a day at leisure. Spend time in Torquay, (the hotel offers a transfer service for guests) which has many attractions including the pier. Built in 1890, it is the perfect place to stop and gaze out to sea, or watch the constant comings and goings in the adjacent marina. Don’t miss the Italian Gardens, which form part of Abbey Park and Meadows. During the day, there’ll also be an opportunity for an optional Mystery Drive. We’ll meet at the end of the day for evening dinner.

Wednesday: After a good breakfast, we head for home to take in just one more tour highlight with an extended lunch stop at the City of Wells. A medieval city nestling on the southern side of the Mendip Hills. Wells gets its name from the springs which can today be found in the gardens of the Bishop’s Palace. Wells is the smallest city in England and can call itself a city because of the famous 13th century Cathedral. It remains remarkably unspoilt and has many other historic buildings including the moated Bishop’s Palace and a good local museum. We continue our journey to arrive home during the late afternoon. So many tour attractions that we can’t wait to share this adventure with you!
