A 4-night, 5-day tour – Sunday 15th to Thursday 19th August 2021
Alnwick Garden • Alnwick Castle • Roman Fort • Hexham • Holy Island • Bamburgh Castle
Northumberland is a region of dramatic locations from Hadrian’s Wall guarding the Northern Roman
frontier, to enchanting castles and miles of heritage coastline. An exclusively designed tour!
SUNDAY: An early start heading north with ample comfort stops and an extended lunch stop at Wollaton Hall. Now a prominent Grade One listed building, the stunning Hall houses Nottingham’s Natural History Museum along with reconstructed room settings. Standing on a natural hill, Wollaton Hall is set in five hundred acres of spectacular gardens and parkland. The hall was used as the setting for Wayne Manor in the 2012 Batman film, Dark Knight Rises. On then to our base in Northumberland to relax before evening dinner.
MONDAY: Breakfast then our adventure takes us to Alnwick Garden – one of the world’s most ambitious new gardens. The Duchess of Northumberland’s vision for a forgotten plot is now a truly 21st century experience full of imagination, inspiration and fun. This afternoon, visit neighbouring Alnwick Castle, made famous as a setting for the Blackadder series and Harry Potter films. We return to our hotel for relaxing time before evening dinner is served.
TUESDAY: After breakfast, we follow the heritage coast to the historic port of Amble, ‘the friendliest port’ and the southern gateway to Northumberland’s coastline and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. After our coffee stop, we cross the dramatic causeway to reach the island of Lindisfarne, on a journey that will stay in your memory forever. (Timings are tide dependent). We follow in the footsteps of the ancient monks who built their priory here nearly 1,400 years ago, and explore the wild coastal beauty of Holy Island. Later we visit imposing Bamburgh Castle. With lots to explore and mysteries to uncover, you can discover stories of mystery, intrigue and betrayal… or simply enjoy the stunning views in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Back at our hotel, you can relax a while before evening dinner is served. The Hotel: The Holiday Inn Newcastle-upon-Tyne is an ideal tour base set in eighteen acres of grounds adjacent to the stunning Northumbrian coastline. The hotel’s wide range of facilities are complimented by an outstanding restaurant and bar with menus sourced from local produce. Bedrooms are roomy and well-equipped and all ground floor rooms have been newly refurbished to a contemporary and high standard. The Health and Fitness club includes an indoor pool, spa, steam room, sauna and beauty salon.
WEDNESDAY: After breakfast, we travel along George Wade’s ‘Military Road’ tracing the path of Hadrian’s Wall to Chester’s Roman Fort. Part of Hadrian’s Wall, Chester’s is the best-preserved Roman cavalry fort in Britain. We take time for lunch at the market town of Hexham. Once the haunt of marauding Vikings 1300 years ago, nowadays Hexham proudly holds the title of England’s favourite market town. The town centre is filled with winding streets with Hexham Abbey, the keystone of Hexham’s assets, at its hub. There’s also a short break in Corbridge with its boutique shops and cafes. Walk through the town’s streets and experience a time-capsule of Roman life. Time permitting, discover Roman armour and trinkets uncovered with the Corbridge Hoard at the museum. We return to base with free time to relax before evening dinner is served.
THURSDAY: After breakfast, our homeward run includes an extended lunch break and a Traditional Pork Pie Making Demonstration and tasting. Dickinson & Morris have been baking pork pies at Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe in Melton Mowbray since 1851. Watch a personal demonstration of ‘hand raising’ a pork pie and discover how Melton Mowbray became so famous for pork pies. With fond memories of a rewarding tour, we journey on to arrive in the local area during mid evening.
