SHORT BREAKS

Welsh Treasures and the Royal Mint

A 4-night, 5-day tour – Saturday 01st to Wednesday 05th April 2023

Caerphilly Castle • Royal Mint • Big Pit Mining Museum • Penderyn Visitor Centre

Based in the capital city, this tour captures the essence of Welsh culture and spectacular scenery, in addition to including a visit to one of the most interesting new attractions in many years: The Royal Mint Visitor Centre. Since decimal coinage was introduced, the Royal Mint has been at Llantrisant, but for half of its 1,000-year history it was located in the Tower of London. It now produces coins and medals for over 60 countries worldwide.

SATURDAY: A breakfast time departure with ample comfort stops as we divert off route to Cardiff to visit Monmouth. Nestling in the tranquil lower reaches of the beautiful Wye Valley, Monmouth has been a centre for tourism since 1780. Well known for its iconic 13th century gatehouse bridge, Monmouth has a famous past with its connections to Henry V, Geoffrey of Monmouth and (more recently) Queen, Oasis & Simple Minds. Renowned for its independent retail sector, with restaurants to suit all tastes, it is also the place for a coffee in a café in a quiet courtyard or a visit to its Georgian Shire Hall or Monmouth Museum. Arriving at our hotel, there’s time to relax and explore before dinner.

SUNDAY: First stop after breakfast is Caerphilly, for a visit to the largest castle in Wales. Explore this 13th century sleeping giant before time at leisure in the town, famous for its cheese. We proceed deeper into the Welsh Valleys to the fascinating and highly entertaining Llancaiach Fawr Manor House. The ‘servants’ of this Tudor Manor House will be on hand to show you around. Evening dinner concludes the day.

MONDAY: Enjoy a Welsh breakfast then today begins with admission to the Royal Mint Visitor Centre, for an escorted tour of the production process. From here, enjoy an engaging, self-guided tour of static and interactive exhibits, bringing to life the Mint’s heritage. This afternoon, there is an introductory guided tour in the attractive city centre of Cardiff, as well as the modernised Cardiff Bay with its fascinating public buildings, including the Welsh Assembly. Later, relax and enjoy evening dinner.

TUESDAY: After breakfast, an excursion to the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park and a morning visit to Big Pit Mining Museum to learn about the region’s heritage. As well as an underground tour of the mine, there is a virtual tour above ground, providing a moving and entertaining illustration of the lives of miners at work and home. This afternoon, we visit Penderyn Visitor Centre to learn about whisky making in Wales and general Welsh history in the exhibition centre. We’ll return to Cardiff for an opportunity to see the excellent Cardiff Arms Park Choir rehearsing classic Welsh anthems (subject to availability) just across the road, prior to a slightly later dinner.

WEDNESDAY: A farewell Welsh breakfast before we commence our homeward journey via the famous Cheddar Gorge and an extended lunch stop in the City of Wells in Somerset. With its historic centre, the magnificent cathedral, and the unique moated Bishop’s Palace, there’s also plenty of refreshment outlets. With fond memories of your adventure, we arrive in the local area during late afternoon.

The Hotel:
